Monster Menagerie 3

Monster Menagerie 3 was just released, and I have all the previews in place on the set page:

Some really nice figures in there. The Goblin Hucker might just be my favorite.

What do y'all think?

I was especially happy to see Death Dogs, and I've got a dozen Stirges already in the mail to me!

The gnomes & gnolls are nice, but I think we now have more than enough giants in the world...

Pre-ordered a case of this and was a little saddened when the set was finally released. Of all the Icons sets, this is one I really could have done without. I'm all for equality in gaming and encourage it. I appreciate that Wizards and Wizkids have released a lot more female figures into the markeplace... but this set seems like it's mostly just a genderbending of everything that has come before. I knew this was going to be the first set after SKT to have huge figures, and being a Monster Menagerie release, I was expecting some adult dragons and more. Plenty of stuff in the monster manual that needs that base size. Instead, we get Stone and Hill giants as women. We get the male version of frost giants (as opposed to the female in SKT). The female Vampire Spawn is even a perfect pairing to Pathfinder's male Vampire Spawn in Rusty Dragon Inn.

Now there ARE a few minis in this set that are new and super cool, The Ulitharid is probably one of the best minis in the set, as is the Goblin Hucker. But these arent even Huge size and could have been in any other set. It's just a disappointment that so much of this set is unoriginal and not much in it are minis that we havent seen before.

I'm disappointed too. In terms of quality control and case distribution, this is easily the worst of the Icons of the Realms line. I got a case as well. I usually get one or two minis that are broken and need replacing, but in this case there were eight, including a few of the giants. One booster only had three figures. Usually each brick has at least one of the invisible variants. For me, there was only one in the whole case.

The paint jobs were a bit uneven. One of the figures is misnamed on the base, which I haven't seen happen before.

And in terms of figure choice, a lot of it just seems lazy. Lots of repetition and A-B versions of figures. That's usually okay for commons and uncommons, but to have four of the rares with alternate versions just seems like a cynical way to drive more case sales into the aftermarket.

I know I'm sounding really negative here, but there were some real high points in the set. The Goblin Hucker might just be my favorite mini ever. The Storm Giant was awesome (mine was broken, though). The Everlasting One is great. We need more figures like those, ones that suggest characters and inspire encounters.

What's really puzzling is how the Pathfinder Battles line is consistently higher quality than the D&D line. No chase figures there. If you buy a case, you get them all. The choices for commons and uncommons are usually pretty sensible. The sculpts and paint jobs are consistently better. I imagine that comes down to licensor control, and that Paizo is calling the shots more effectively than WotC is. But I also have to wonder if the lines are created in completely separate factories.

Ugh, okay. Rant over.
