Site updates
I've added photos to Forum posts and replies. It's a little rough at the moment and I need to clean up styling a bit, so feedback is welcome.
I also added an expanded list of recently added figures, which can be found as a new tab on the Figure Finder page here. There's also a link on the home page beneath the Recent Additions section.
Added set numbers and corrected some figure names for Pathfinder Battles Iconic Heroes Set #5.
Performed back-end security updates.
Added set numbers and corrected figure names for Pathfinder Battles Iconic Heroes Set #4.
Caught up on tagging (was behind by about 50 figures.) All figures are now tagged.
Updated site with new preview figures along with two previously unlisted promos. Caught up on tagging.
Various module updates and stability fixes.
Fixed broken link to new posts in forum.
Behind-the-scenes work on an updated menu system.
Fixed a bug that was introduced in the last round of updates that changed the heights of entries on all miniatures grid pages.
Corrected names and set numbers for Pathfinder Battles Iconic Heroes Set #6.
MAJOR UPDATE: Replaced the old main menu with a completely new dropdown menu. The new menu should make the site a lot easier to browse, and also allow for a better experience when viewing the site on a phone or tablet.
Re-factored the way that miniatures are displayed in the grid (recent additions, set grids, and figure finder). This is mostly prep work that will make it easier to add some new features, but it comes with a styling upgrade as well.
MAJOR UPDATE: Added color-coded collection information and filters to individual miniatures on set pages. Users can now see how many of each figure they have and want on the set's gallery, without having to click through to the Manage Collection tab.
Also fixed an issue where the thumbnail image was not appearing when users clicked on the image icons on the Manage Collection and Checklist tabs.
Also also fixed some miscellaneous spelling and image issues for various minis (many thanks to user ALEXOFMACEDONIA for reporting the issues.)
More background code updates. Mostly removing old code that's no longer used.
Also, last week I added a new "subset" functionality that allows for displaying grouped sets within other sets. This will help consolidate some existing lines (like Dungeon Command) and allow for the large, multipart case incentive sets to be broken out into single figures.
Updated figure names, numbers and tagging for the Epic Level Starter Set: http://www.miniscollector.com/icons-realms/epic-level-starter
I've also been knocking down spam posts, which are happening more and more frequently. Apologies to anyone who might have seen some inappropriate language or links. I'm working on finding a solution to the problem.
Added D&D Attack Wing figures.
Tagged D&D Attack Wing figures.
Catching up on content updates:
Star Trek Attack Wing added.
Updated images for Iconic Heroes Set 7.
Added new Maze of Death figures.
Tagging is now up-to-date, with the exception of a few Jungle of Despair figures that are unnamed. I've also added a new rarity level for "Case Incentive". These figures were previously marked "Promo", which made sense at the time, but not so much now. You can use this new rarity level in the Figure Finder to show only the figures associated with it.
I'm still working on adding images for the individual components of the boxed sets and hope to have them in place later this week. I also have some UI improvements in the pipeline that I hope to release either late this week or early next.
I've used the subset feature to separate "special" figures like invisible variants and dungeon dressing into their own area below the main set listings. Tracking is unaffected by this, but it makes the set pages a little nicer looking and better organized.
I've also, slowly but steadily, been adding images for figures that were missing them. The first priority is making sure as many figures as possible have at least one image. After that, I'll be focused on replacing sub-par images (those without white backgrounds, and those that are blurry or borrowed.) Last, I'll be adding actual images for the figures that just have digital previews. There are something like 4100 images on the site (so far!), so this will be an ongoing effort.
MAJOR UPDATE: The collection summary that appears on each set page has been overhauled to include a graphical representation of the figures you have and are collecting.
If you're collecting the entire set, the graph will appear as a circle. If you're collecting part of the set, it will appear as an arc. Collected figures are represented in green while the figures that still need to be collected are represented in blue. Formatting for the totals has been updated to make them easier to read.
This new display style has been carried over to the Collection page, along with some other major changes. Sets are now grouped together by line with the most recent sets appearing at the top. If you don't want to view a particular line, you can click the arrow to the left of the title to collapse it. All sets appear on this page, even those you are not collecting. If you don't want to see the sets you're not collecting, you can click the "Hide Not Collecting" button.
There's also a summary area at the top of the collection page that shows the total number of figures in your collection, along with how many you want and how many you have to trade. If you collapse a line, the totals are recalculated to not include the hidden line. So, if you want to see your totals for only Pathfinder Battles (for example), just collapse all lines except Pathfinder. When you expand a line, totals will be similarly recalculated.
This is a pretty big change from the way things were before, so if you have any feedback, good or bad, I'd love to hear it. Please drop me a line on the contact form and let me know what you think!
I refactored the code that generates the collection summaries in order to speed things up.
Previously, the collection stats were built every time they were viewed, leading to a bunch of extra calls to the database. So I implemented a caching system that only rebuilds the stats for a given set when the figures in that set are updated. The result is a major decrease in the amount of time it takes to load the collection page (after the first time you access it, when the cache is built), and a moderate improvement in the loading speed of the set pages. Because I've reduced the overall load on the database, other pages should see a small speed boost as well.
I have some additional site optimizations in the works, in order to address speed issues. I'm also looking into moving the site from shared hosting to a dedicated VPS, assuming it's economically feasible to do so.
I've made a few additional tweaks to help decrease loading times and take more stress off of the database. I also performed some security updates and added some tools to help me intercept forum spam more quickly.
I rolled out a number of interface changes over the weekend, all of them geared toward improving the user experience on mobile devices. In short:
- Updated the login/signup process to a modal (popup) window to fix mobile width issues and free up space in the header on desktop
- Reformatted the display of minis grids for mobile layouts (it's more compact now for easier scrolling, and just looks better)
- At desktop widths, minis grids display four across, rather than the previous five. This allows a slightly larger display of figure images
- Updated the mobile menu sizing and colors in order to make navigation a little more pleasant.
- Fixed some minor color and font sizing issues
More changes are in the works, so watch for those tweaks to be added in the coming weeks. And as always, your feedback is most welcome.
Minor reorganization of the main menu to group all the newer WizKids lines into one area. Reaper Legendary Encounters can now be found under the Other Figures section.
Found a bug that was causing the D&D Miniatures gallery pages to display the set twice. A weird little bug that was related to how I was listing the sets in the category tree. It's fixed now.
Also working on catching up on tagging. There were about 90 miniatures missing tags last week. I have that down to around a dozen, and should have those tagged by the end of the week.
Just a quick update:
As many of you have no doubt noticed, I'm behind on content updates to the site. Like, very behind. I'm planning to get caught up soon, so please bear with me. I'm only one person and frankly I've been struggling with keeping things up to date under the constant deluge of products coming from WizKids. I need to move some things around to make space in the menu structure but I'm getting there. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience.
On another note, I recently discovered a bug in the Contact form that was preventing some responses from reaching me. Unfortunately, it has been a problem for a long time (as in multiple years!) If you sent me a message and didn't receive a response, this is why. I apologize if it seemed as if I was ignoring you. That's definitely not the case. So, if you had something you wanted to discuss that I didn't respond to, please try me again. I've fixed the problem, so your message should come through just fine.
Thanks and best wishes,
Chris
