The Figure Finder is really great. It would be awesome if you could search your own collection with it as well (so I can, say, find all the figures I have that are tagged "Orc" for instance). This would make the site a really useful tool for me as a DM when I'm prepping my games (and trying to decide if I need to buy more miniatures!)
It's definitely on my list. I've been running up against some technical issues that make it a little challenging, but I think it's doable.
When looking at a given set, I would enjoy it if the figures already in my collection had some indication, perhaps a colored border or corner tag.
Great idea! Thanks!
Yes, I second that comment about some visual indication of what figures you own in a given set from the main gallery, like a colored border.
Also, when you go into the "my collection" tab, being able to see an image gallery of just the minis you own from any given set would be great.
Finally, from the "my collection" tab, being able to set want=0 or have =1, etc., for all figures at once, instead of having to enter them one-by-one, would be great.
These are minor tweaks. Overall I love the site!
Not sure how it would be accomplished, but it would be nice to have the ability to filter out Star Wars figures when doing a search.
Great ideas, mikecy!
Gemini Six, I had that capability at one point, but it looks like I inadvertently removed it when I made some updates to the way sets are handled a while back. I'll add it back in.
Any chance to enlarge the mini pic when clicked on? It's great to have the mini appear as a separate image for use in games when clicked on without all the extra detail. I use these images for my game and all the time. Each of my minis names are hyperlinked in Excel so I can click on them to know what they look like when needed. Images are great to remember what each mini is as there are so many thousands that it's hard to remember. A great high resolution image is a great bonus to click on! Click the pick and a separate image is enlarged to see! Awesome!
Yes, that's possible, but we need to upgrade our images first. Especially in the case of the earliest sets, the "larger" image wouldn't be any bigger than the one on the gallery view.
Changes to the site have been pretty slow these last few months. Life has kind of intervened in a big way. But I have a ton of items on my list and hope to be able to make some progress on it soon. In the meantime, thanks to everyone for your patience!
Have you considered adding HeroScape figures? Those and HeroClix are the only PPMs that we're missing, I think.
There are certainly other mini lines besides Heroscape and Heroclix. A couple of examples would be Horrorclix and World of Warcraft. However, that is a great suggestion. I can only imagine how long the process would be to add all the Heroclix minis!
I have some minis from all of those lines, and I would like them to be represented here, so I could catalog my complete collection.
But, I worry that there wouldn't be enough bang for the buck: a bunch of work for Chris, without as much benefit for the members.
Some people, no doubt, have vast Heroclix collections, and a few "early-adopters" may have large Heroscape collections, but I would expect that most D&D-type collectors have only a modest sampling from these "bulkier" sets.
That said, though, I have found some great figures among the 'Clix, especially LotR/Hobbit figures, a few Yu-Gi-Oh, some Halo, and a fair number (but tiny percentage) of Heroclix. And, of course, Mage Knight.
(Also, I would worry about Search-clutter, with so many non-core minis (for fantasy collectors). )
I've definitely considered adding HeroClix and Mage Knight, as well as a bunch of other PPM lines (Attack Wing, Dreamblade, World of Warcraft, Axis and Allies and so on). So far I haven't, because I built the site with roleplaying gamers in mind. Would HeroClix collectors be interested in using the site if we didn't have all the stats that went with the figures? Would they be interested at all, for that matter?
But I'm all for adding new lines. I'm going to start a new thread to start soliciting suggestions.
This might sound silly, but a post count would be cool as well. I think for all members, especially active ones from the beginning, it means a lot. It makes one feel a connection and recognizing how active they've been. I'm never the top poster on any of the sites I visit, but I do find it curious to see who is . I have this capacity on my home brewed game site so I'm figuring it can't be that difficult. It is definitely something tat I feel would be important and then you can also attribute titles to the post #! Something to strive for.
Hey Chris:
How difficult is it to add a post counter? It may even motivate more active board participation!
John
It shouldn't be super difficult. I'll look into it.
That would be awesome Chris!
A few other idle ideas which I know I might enjoy...
1) Ratings: Something like a 5 star system to which those with a figure in their collection could add their voice; either in individual categories such as Sculpt, Paint Job, Pose, & Overall Utility; or an aggregate of those. I would be mildly interested in comparing my opinions to those of others, and it might be especially helpful when judging whether or not to pick up a particular figure.
2) Comments: Allowing those who felt they had something to say about a particular mini might be especially useful to those considering a purchase. (And it would be an outlet for those who had a special urge to praise or vent about a given figure. ;)
3) Viewing Others' Collections: We hardcore collectors might get a kick out of seeing what others have felt was worth accumulating. (And who wouldn't like to show-off the results of their good taste or poor money-management skills? ;) If collectors could Comment on their collections, all the more fun! ("I felt orcs should be more primitive, so the Savage & Mountain Orc minis found special favor with me." or "As can be seen, buying blind boxes causes one to end up with more Pickled Punks than one will ever use...")
4) Showcasing: If individual collections could be viewed, what could be more ego-stroking than allowing each collector to tag some of their minis to appear in a chosen display (or more than one), showcasing a subset of their collection, such as "My favorite minis...", "All the figures I used in my Serpent-Men campaign...", or "Miniatures Paizo should have thought twice before releasing..."
These are merely the stuff of dreams: things I would like, in the best of all possible worlds.
All good ideas. Ratings are in offing, and mostly ready to go. I'd like to get more users on the site before I add them, so we don't have a ton of figures with empty ratings.
Comments are doable, but I want to get a handle on the spam posts that have been showing up in the forum before I expand user input like that. I have anti-spam measures installed, but a few bad posts are still getting through.
The rest is all possible, in time. Keep the suggestions coming!
Post counts are up!
It would be nice to have at least the HeroScape minis that were part of the D&D line of minis (Battle for Underdark and the 3 D&D expansions, Waves 11, 12, 13). They are all repaints of other D&D miniatures sets, I believe, which is helpful for DMs trying to collect variants.
OK Chris, now your just pulling us in without a life jacket! All sounds great and I assure you that many more will be joining up as the site establishes it self. The added post count is great. Next I think the most important thing is to ensure that post are created for newly displayed minis from Pathfinder and WotC. I remember the days when there were spoilers and that was crazy awesome. However, posting the new display of minis week by week is important to keep the site up to date. Heroscape all the way! That was a great line of minis!
Here's a suggestion of what NOT to do which drives me crazy as well as my players of my personal gaming message board site. Don't create too many "stickied". It's good to see the most recent post and topic up top. I understand the need for "sticky" topics on occasion, but as sites gain longevity there could be 5-10 topics which are "stickied" up top causing you to scroll down half the page to get the current news. Keep the current news fresh and up top.
Oh, I almost forgot. It would be great if you could add emojis to a post as well as the ability to bold, underline and italicize points in a post.
Another suggestion Chris (not meaning to be annoying or overwhelming) , but what about giving us the ability to post an image to the site instead of a link? I hope you take into consideration the ideas I posted. The site is till great without them, but I'm sure it would be much better with them.
Thanks for your hard work in making the greatest pre-painted images available.
It might be pleasant to be able to assign minis to personalized sets (like those you would choose for an adventure). But i'd think that set should be stored on the member's own system (not using up the site's precious resources). I envision the unique mini IDs being called to display together from that member- stored set data.
Just a fun notion , which I wouldn't want to be a burden.
I have something like that in mind, Brontoceratops, along with a complete overhaul of how collections are displayed. There are a lot of changes to the back-end that I need to make in order to move forward (mostly due to short-sightedness on my part.) I'll keep at it!
The crowdsourcing thread suggested this: it could be handy if the site could tally our collections' total physical minis owned, as well as total unique minis (sculpts).
Yep. I'd like to also add milestones at some point (for example: "If you lined your figures up base-to-base, they would reach XX feet, or longer than a football field!") That might be a little more pie-in-the-sky, and maybe too silly. Would that interest anyone?
I've added a new thread to keep track of new site features as they're implemented. That thread will be locked to keep it tidy, but feel free to start new topics to discuss anything you see listed there. And keep the suggestions coming!
Thanks!
